BLING it on.

Old-style Hollywood glamour and elegance was the official dress code on the red carpet. Sweeping gowns, chic chignons and dazzling chandelier diamond earrings prevailed.

Summing up the glamorous mood was the presenter Eva Longoria Parker, who hit the starwalk in a strapless - for it was certainly all about flashing flesh this year - red satin gown complete with fishtail trail.

The rising star Amy Adams and Renee Zellweger opted for traditional black, but gold, silver, rich, gem-inspired shades of red and blue, and lots of floaty, happy yellow were very much the order of the day.

Jennifer Lopez topped the style stakes in a gleaming gilt backless number that appeared to be her own take on a Golden Globe.

The reigning queen of Hollywood, Angelina Jolie, has ended her love affair with black and embraced a more demure look, which she pulled off beautifully in a sparkly Versace number.

Resplendent in all white on the night was Kate Beckinsale, who rarely puts a foot wrong.

Mentions must also go to Christina Applegate, elegant in a strapless yellow drop-waisted Roberto Cavalli creation, the newcomer Frieda Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire, Laura Linney and Australia's Rachel Griffiths for braving yellow and working the look with aplomb.

Shockers included Drew Barrymore's hair, the disaster that was Renee Zellweger, Marisa Tomei and Anne Hathaway for opting for a shade far too dark for her skin.
